With the bulk of the free-agent and off-season trades around the league wrapped up, it looks more and more like Sac is going to start the season with Bagley as the starting 4. Fan dreams of landing Pascal Siakam from Toronto for Marv, Buddy, and a 1st round pick aren’t realistic right now.
The best bet is for the Kings to hope the underwhelming fourth-year power forward can stay healthy and improve his trade stock over the first couple months and then see what trade opportunities reveal themselves after December 15, when all the summer free-agents can be moved.
We might be surprised, and Marvin could come back with a renewed motivation as this is his contract season. His outside shot looked better last year – before he got hurt again. The team’s new focus on defense might prompt him to step it up on that side of the court as well. Although, in contract seasons, players usually focus on their offensive numbers as those are what drive $$$.
Regardless, I would rather take another run at Marv if something does not happen before the start of the season. What’s the worst that could happen? He struggles or gets hurt again and Sac walks away at the end of the year with nothing on the books. Or he blows up and we have an asset to work with. Super low risk situation here.
